Inside The Oakland Raiders I’ll play catch up during the slow news period following the holiday after the most extended blog break in a year, but wanted to pass along that Comcast SportsNet Bay Area will air a small portion of an interview with Raiders owner Al Davis tonight on “Chronicle Live.” Read more.
What we are talking about today: Raiders' news, The Raiders Offense

It’s tempting to think that most sports problems would go away if only the gazillionaire owners would act more like fans. If they bled team colors like we do, they’d never let beloved free agents walk or threaten to leave town unless they got new stadiums…right?
Chris O’Neill received a phone call from the Oakland Raiders the other day.
The next call, he was told, would be from owner Al Davis himself.

Thoughts from the Dark Side
Michael Bush was drafted by the Oakland Raiders out of the University of Louisville in the fourth round of the 2007 draft. He was unable to play his rookie season, as he recovered from a broken leg, however the Raiders will be expecting big things from him in the 2009 season.
It is Bush who is the next player that is being spotlighted in the “Under the Raider” series. Outside of the Raider Nation, Bush is mostly a forgotten man, but inside the Raider Nation he is well known.

Wide receiver Javon Walker’s tenure in Oakland has been turbulent thus far, but his importance during the upcoming season is crucial. The Raiders deploy an inexperienced group of wideouts and Walker must become the catalyst the team expected him to be. If Oakland’s passing game is able to get back on track this year, Walker’s leadership and production must take a major step forward.
As the …

While many question marks surround the Oakland Raiders’ wide receiving corps, the tight end position is in good hands thanks to Zach Miller — who proved to be one of quarterback JaMarcus Russell’s favorite targets a year ago and their relationship is expected to flourish even more during the upcoming season.
For a young and developing signal caller, having a dependable tight end is one of the …

Although he was drafted into one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the NFL, Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell continues to draw adverse reviews. Russell’s long-term future remains uncertain, but continuous remarks regarding his poor work ethic are becoming redundant. Russell has risen above several factors working against him and should be given a clean slate entering just his …

The Washington Times predicts the Raiders will be the worst team in the NFL this season with a record of 2-14.
My take: That’s a little harsh. I do not expect the Raiders to finish that poorly. The Raiders were 5-11 last season and I don’t see the team taking a major step back. At this point, I think the Raiders will win 5-8 games in 2009. There are decent things happening in Oakland. A 2-14 season in Oakland would be a surprise.

AFC West all-decade honors
Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson
We’re wrapping up our all-decade week with our AFC West decade awards:
Moment of the decade: Oakland advancing to Super Bowl XXXVII
The Raiders beat Tennessee to advance to the Super Bowl in January 2003 to culminate four years of knocking on the door.
It was the first and last time an AFC West team made the Super Bowl this decade; the division’s Super Bowl drought is the longest in the NFL.
Things have gone downhill for Oakland since then. The Raiders were embarrassed in the Super Bowl by former coach Jon Gruden and Tampa Bay. Oakland is 24-72 in the six seasons since, the worst six-year record by any team in NFL history. But the Raiders do have the memory of having the best moment in the division this decade.

Starting today for the next 32 days - leading into the start of Redskins training camp July 30, I’ll preview one NFL team, from the worst to the best. Today: The Raiders bring up the rear.

The Oakland Raiders announced Friday that they are entering a sponsorship deal with AirAsia, the largest low-fare airline in Asia, to serve and expand the franchise’s global fan base.
Thoughts from the Dark Side
With the chronic soreness in the hamstring of Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, he was nearly non-existent at mini camp and OTA’s.
When he was drafted, he was seen as an extremely durable player who never misses games but that is about to change.
Hamstring problems can be nasty and lingering. They can keep a player out an entire season and often end a player’s career. Heyward-Bey is just that kind of player. Without his speed, he is an average receiver. Perhaps even pedestrian. Even if he was slowed by his hamstring, it would mean big trouble.
